Practice Details:

Kelowna General Hospital is seeking an Acute Care General Surgeon to join the Division of General Surgery.

Our Division of General Surgery consists of a highly collegial group of 9 General Surgeons who support Complex Surgical Oncology, Colorectal, MIS/Bariatric, Hepatobiliary & Pancreatic, Endoscopy and Trauma surgery. Division members share call and resources equitably based on FTE appointment and supports a shared referral model.

The Acute Care Surgery program at KGH is supported by protected daytime OR access 3 days a week and an on-site supported “rapid access” clinic 2 days a week. All Division members participate in ACS call.

A full-time position is being offered and will include Acute Care Surgery (8 weeks minimum) and Trauma (8 weeks minimum). Opportunities for more ACS weeks are available depending on the candidates preferences. The position also offers optional elective OR time outside of ACS responsibilities to ensure a balanced and rewarding practice for the candidate (~1.5 OR days per ACS week). The position does not include endoscopy responsibilities.

Trauma service coverage includes covering the Trauma inpatient service for a week at a time. During this week, the Trauma physician is expected to lead trauma resuscitation as trauma team leader and admit Trauma patients. The successful candidate will also be expected to provide both local and regional Trauma education as well as participate in quality improvement and program building initiatives. 

KGH is a teaching site for the University of British Columbia Southern Medical Program. The candidate will be expected to work with and teach students and residents who also support the ACS service. No research responsibilities are a requirement of the position however such opportunities are available if desired by the candidate.

Qualifications:
  • Advanced Trauma Life Support Certification (ATLS)
  • Doctorate in Medicine
  • Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada (FRCPC)
  • Eligible for licensure with CPSBC
  • Fellowship in Trauma and/or Acute Care Surgery ATLS Certification

Kelowna General Hospital:

Kelowna General Hospital (KGH), one of BC's leading healthcare centres, is one of two tertiary hospitals within Interior Health. We offer a full range of services with approximately 400 beds and over 84,000 emergency department visits a year.

Home to the Interior Heart & Surgical Centre (IHSC), KGH houses BC’s only cardiac critical care centre outside of Victoria and the Lower Mainland, as well as its principal surgical site. The IHSC features 12 specialized operating rooms designed for thoracic, urology, neurosurgery, vascular, plastic, obstetric/gynecologic, ear, nose, and throat, orthopedic, general, and trauma surgeries. Of these, two operating rooms are dedicated to cardiac surgery. Within the IHSC, KGH also has a modern maternity ward and an adjacent neonatal intensive care unit.

Our state-of-the-art Centennial Building boasts 360,000 square feet and includes an expanded emergency and ambulatory care department, new medical inpatient units, modern operating rooms, and a rooftop helipad. Additional facilities include a dedicated pediatric ward, as well as adolescent and adult psychiatry units. The Dr. Walter Anderson Building houses enhanced laboratory and clinical departments, supporting advanced diagnostic and treatment capabilities.

KGH is also a teaching centre for the Southern Medical Program, affiliated with the University of British Columbia (UBC), and has an academic campus that serves as a satellite for the UBC Faculty of Medicine.
