Join the Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital (KBRH) team in Trail, where your surgical expertise meets the unique healthcare needs of a diverse and active community. In this dynamic role, manage acute and overuse injuries from our community’s adventurous engagement with the stunning local landscape, treating fractures and conditions resulting from a range of recreational activities.

KBRH prides itself on fostering a collaborative and supportive environment. Our dedicated medical staff and comprehensive hospitalist service provide exceptional perioperative and clinical support. The position offers a multitude of patient-focused activities, ensuring a diverse and engaging practice. You will have access to 2 OR days and 2 endoscopy days per month, catering to a wide range of surgical needs. Your work directly impacts the well-being of this vibrant community, encompassing care for sports enthusiasts from skiing, snowboarding, hiking, mountain biking, to kayaking and fishing mishaps on the river.

Your foundational expertise in endoscopic procedures is crucial to our team. We value your proficiency or eagerness to expand into specialized areas vital to our community’s well-being. This includes mastering pacemaker insertions and managing peritoneal dialysis (PD) catheter and permacath insertions for renal patients. In this pivotal role, your surgical expertise extends beyond recreational injuries to safeguard the health and resilience of Trail’s workforce. Your capabilities ensure those who power the town’s economic engine — from tradespeople to technology professionals — receive the essential care they need to thrive, reflecting the active lifestyle and industrial backdrop of Trail.

The Rural Specialist Locum Program (RSLP) provides coverage for travel and accommodations when following program guidelines. Depending on journey length, physicians may earn up to $1,560 for travel time costs. The program also reimburses reasonable transportation and lodging expenses, as outlined in current policy terms. This job posting is for a position covered by the Provincial Health Officer’s mandatory COVID-19 vaccination order, and selected applicant(s) must comply with the requirements of the order.

Call Schedule:

Hours of work: We want you to love life in and outside work, and we're committed to helping you achieve that perfect balance.
On call requirements: With a 1:5 on-call rotation, you'll have plenty of time to relax and reset in between.

Estimated Gross Income

As a general surgeon in Trail, you can expect total compensation of around $400,000 to $600,000, through a fee-for-service payment structure and MOCAP level 1.

RSA Incentives

Recruitment incentive: $15,000, prorated for physicians working less than full time
Relocation: $9,000 if moving within BC, $12,000 within Canada, and $15,000 from outside Canada
Fee premium: 11.48%
Annual retention fee: $17,421
RCME funding: $600 for up to 2 years in Trail, $3,600 during your 3rd and 4th year, and $6,600 after 4 years, in addition to the Doctors of BC CME funds.

The above numbers are based on a full-time position and may be prorated for physicians working less than full time. Rural incentives are subject to change and current rates are confirmed at the time of offer.
