Join the Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital (KBRH) team in Trail, where your surgical expertise meets the unique healthcare needs of a diverse and active community. In this vital role, you will address a broad spectrum of surgical cases, reflecting the active lifestyles and diverse needs of our community members.
KBRH prides itself on fostering a collaborative and supportive environment. Our dedicated medical staff and comprehensive hospitalist service provide exceptional perioperative and clinical support. The position offers a multitude of patient-focused activities, ensuring a diverse and engaging practice. You will have access to 4 OR days and 4 endoscopy days per month, catering to a wide range of surgical needs.
Your foundational expertise in endoscopic procedures is crucial to our team. Besides your time at KBRH, your skills will be invaluable to Kootenay Lakes Hospital in Nelson, Castlegar and District Community Health Centre, Grand Forks’ Boundary District Hospital, Slocan Community Health Centre, and Arrow Lakes Hospital in Nakusp. You will be instrumental in delivering high-quality care across the region.
Our close collaboration with the UBC Faculty of Medicine offers enriching opportunities to teach 3rd-year medical students. This integration allows you to seamlessly incorporate teaching into your schedule, providing a rewarding balance of professional development and significant contributions to clinical education.

The Rural Specialist Locum Program (RSLP) provides coverage for travel and accommodations when following program guidelines. Depending on journey length, physicians may earn up to $1,560 for travel time costs. The program also reimburses reasonable transportation and lodging expenses, as outlined in current policy terms. With a 1:5 on-call rotation, you'll have plenty of time to relax and reset in between.
Compensation:
Estimated Gross Income
As a general surgeon in Trail, you can expect total compensation of around $400,000 to $600,000, through a fee-for-service payment structure and MOCAP level 1.
RSA Incentives
Recruitment incentive: $15,000, prorated for physicians working less than full time
Relocation: $9,000 if moving within BC, $12,000 within Canada, and $15,000 from outside Canada
Fee premium: 11.48%
Annual retention fee: $17,790
RCME funding: $600 for up to 2 years in Trail, $3,600 during your 3rd and 4th year, and $6,600 after 4 years, in addition to the Doctors of BC CME funds.
The above numbers are based on a full-time position and may be prorated for physicians working less than full time. Rural incentives are subject to change and current rates are confirmed at the time of offer.
