Fantastic opportunity for a Cardiac Surgeon to join the highly collegial team of talented and dedicated professionals at Kelowna General Hospital’s Interior Heart & Surgical Centre.

Located in the city of Kelowna, the Heart & Surgical Centre is the main referral center for Interior Health with a catchment population of approximately one million people. The Cardiac Services Program has achieved some of the best outcomes in Canada and provides residents of the BC Interior with the cardiac care they need, offering the whole spectrum of cardiac surgical services short of transplantation. Our group of 5 Cardiac Surgeons, with volumes of close to 700 cases per year, supported by the team of 3 Cardiac Surgical Assistants, 4 Interventionists, 3 Electrophysiologists, 11 General Cardiologists, 6 NPs, and more than 200 medical and clinical staff, including cardiac anaesthetists, perfusionists, clinical nursing staff, anaesthesia assistants, and support staff. KGH offers Cardiac Surgeons in hospital offices and has a 20 bed Cardiac Surgery Medical Unit, an 8 bed Coronary Intensive Care Unit (CCU), an 8 bed Cardiac Surgery Intensive Care Unit (CSICU), and an 18 bed Cardiac Surgery Inpatient (CSIP) ward. Heart transplants and pediatric (child) cardiac surgeries are not performed at KGH.

If you are comfortable working with all aspects of adult cardiac surgery, have expertise in minimally invasive surgery including mitral, endovascular therapy and TAVI, enjoy working in a highly integrated team setting and are excited to further develop our programs and cardiac service delivery, this could be the opportunity for you!

In this position you will also have the opportunity to discover the rewards of clinical teaching with 3rd and 4th year medical students of the UBC Southern Medical Program completing 1-2 week rotations with our program.

Kelowna General Hospital (KGH), one of BC's leading healthcare centres, is one of two tertiary hospitals within Interior Health. We offer a full range of services with approximately 400 beds and over 84,000 emergency department visits a year.

Home to the Interior Heart & Surgical Centre (IHSC), KGH houses BC’s only cardiac critical care centre outside of Victoria and the Lower Mainland, as well as its principal surgical site. The IHSC features 12 specialized operating rooms designed for thoracic, urology, neurosurgery, vascular, plastic, obstetric/gynecologic, ear, nose, and throat, orthopedic, general, and trauma surgeries. Of these, two operating rooms are dedicated to cardiac surgery. Within the IHSC, KGH also has a modern maternity ward and an adjacent neonatal intensive care unit.

Our state-of-the-art Centennial Building boasts 360,000 square feet and includes an expanded emergency and ambulatory care department, new medical inpatient units, modern operating rooms, and a rooftop helipad. Additional facilities include a dedicated pediatric ward, as well as adolescent and adult psychiatry units. The Dr. Walter Anderson Building houses enhanced laboratory and clinical departments, supporting advanced diagnostic and treatment capabilities.

KGH is also a teaching centre for the Southern Medical Program, affiliated with the University of British Columbia (UBC), and has an academic campus that serves as a satellite for the UBC Faculty of Medicine.
