Practice Details:

The Department of Emergency Medicine at Kelowna General Hospital is now accepting applications for permanent full-time positions, tentative start date of July 2025. Start date is negotiable. We are looking to hire a number of new physicians this cycle, as our ED and Kelowna itself is ever growing.

The ideal candidate will enjoy working in a fast-paced, full-service (including paediatrics) ED where you will see everything from trauma to medically complex elderly patients, to pediatrics. As Emergency physicians we perform a wide breadth of procedural skills including intubations, sedations, reductions, cardioversions and chest tube insertions. We are looking for candidates who are committed to delivering the highest quality patient care through strong clinical, interpersonal and communication skills.

KGH has become a robust academic center with Emergency Medicine at the forefront. We have a distinguished FRCPC EM program to complement the UBC Southern Medical School Program and UBC Rural Family Medicine Residency programs here. Our EM staff are engaged with countless teaching and academic opportunities available with all 3 programs. These include Journal Club, Simulation, Core teaching rounds, Grand Rounds, and more. Our ideal candidate will immerse themselves in our academic environment and contribute to building our strong academic foundation.

A permanent full time opportunity consists of ~14 ED shifts/month.

Demonstrated interest and expertise in extracurricular areas (ex. research/QI, Pediatric Emergency Medicine (PEMs), Geriatrics, Business, Health Administration) will be considered an asset. While previous locum work or placements in the KGH ED are considered advantageous, they are not required.

Currently in negotiations for an APP contract, thus the compensation structure may change prior to the July 2025 start date.

Qualifications:
  • Required Qualifications: Doctorate in Medicine Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada (FRCPC) or Certificate of College of Family Physicians of Canada-Emergency Medicine (CCFP-EM) Eligible for licensure with CPSBC Coverage with the Canadian Medical Protective Association Preferred Qualifications: Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification (ACLS) Advanced Trauma Life Support Certification (ATLS) Pediatric Advanced Life Support Certification (PALS)

Additional Incentives

For a full-time position, we offer up to $9,000 in assistance if moving within BC, up to $12,000 within Canada, and up to $15,000 from outside Canada. Please note incentives are subject to change and current rates are confirmed at the time of offer.

Kelowna General Hospital:

Kelowna General Hospital (KGH) is one of two tertiary hospitals within Interior Health, and is the region’s main referral centre, offering a full range of services with approximately 400 beds and over 84,000 ED visits yearly. KGH has become one of BC’s leading healthcare centres.

Home to the Interior Heart & Surgical Centre, the IHSC is BC’s only cardiac critical care centre outside of Victoria and the Lower Mainland, and KGH’s principal surgical site. It features 12 specialized ORs created for Thoracic, Urology, Neurosurgery, Vascular, Plastics, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Ears, Nose, and Throat, Orthopedics, General, and Trauma surgeries. Of these, 2 ORs are dedicated to Cardiac Surgery. Within the IHSC, KGH also has a modern maternity ward and an adjacent Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Our state-of-the-art Centennial Building boasts a total of 360,000 square feet, an expanded emergency and ambulatory care department, new medical inpatient units, modern operating rooms, and a rooftop helipad. Additional facilities include a dedicated pediatric ward, as well as adolescent and adult psychiatry units. The Dr. Walter Anderson Building houses enhanced laboratory and clinical departments, supporting advanced diagnostic and treatment capabilities.

KGH is also a teaching centre for the Southern Medical Program affiliated with UBC and has an academic campus that serves as a satellite for the University of British Columbia Medical School.
