Senior Medical Director
The Senior Medical Director (SMD) strengthens physician governance and integrated leadership across Interior Health (IH). The role advances medical care quality by collaborating with physicians, clinical teams, administrative leaders, and governance structures. The SMD provides strategic leadership to Chiefs of Staff, Department Heads, and Medical Directors to ensure effective governance and high‑quality patient care, reporting to the Executive Medical Director, IH South.
Key Responsibilities
Collaborative Leadership
-Lead within the “One IH” model and partner with administrative leaders to address physician issues and support strategic planning.
-Ensure physician engagement in operational priorities and communicate medical staff issues affecting portfolios.
-Represent IH provincially and support academic partnerships with UBC and the Southern Medical Program.
Medicine & Quality Leadership
- Contribute to Medicine & Quality strategic planning and participate in senior leadership forums.
- Mentor physician leaders, clarify accountabilities, and support performance reviews.
- Ensure governance responsibilities are met under IH bylaws and develop succession plans.
Medical Staff Human Resources
- Support development of IH’s physician HHR plan.
- Ensure consistent credentialing, privileging, and impact assessments aligned with provincial standards.
- Oversee reappointment processes and support physician recruitment, retention, and compensation planning.
Medical Governance
- Strengthen MAC and medical leadership structures on behalf of the Board.
- Guide leaders in applying bylaws, policies, and disciplinary processes.
- Oversee peer reviews and performance evaluations.
Portfolio & Operational Management
- Manage the SMD budget and oversee medical administrative support.
- Coordinate with Communications on public and media inquiries.
Quality & Patient Safety
- Partner with Quality leadership to engage physicians in quality, risk, and accreditation work.
- Support patient safety reviews, critical incident investigations, and system‑wide learning.
- Ensure regular departmental quality reviews and reporting.
Other Duties
Perform additional responsibilities as assigned by the Executive Medical Director.
Qualifications:

• Eligible for privileges as a member of the Medical Staff at an IH facility
• Current licensure as a Physician, Nurse Practitioner, Dentist or Midwife in B.C.
• A Master’s Degree in hospital, healthcare, business administration, or an equivalent degree is preferred.
• A minimum of 5 years of clinical practice experience and progressively more responsible leadership experience in a healthcare environment.
