Position Summary
The Clinical Scientific Director, Research plays a pivotal leadership role in advancing Interior Health’s (IH) research strategy. In alignment with the organization’s vision and values, this role leads the development, implementation, and evaluation of research frameworks and standards, fostering a culture of inquiry and continuous learning across clinical and operational teams.
Working in partnership with the Corporate Director, Research and Evaluation, the Director co-leads the IH Research Strategic Plan, ensuring integration with the broader Interior Health Strategic Plan. This role also champions equity, cultural safety, and anti-racism in research, contributing to the design of a more inclusive and equitable healthcare system.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
• Co-develop and operationalize the IH Research Strategy in alignment with national standards and regulations.
• Embed research into clinical operations, medical staff structures, clinical networks, and regional programs.
• Co-lead research education, training, and personnel funding strategies.
Clinical Research Development
• Identify and support clinical research opportunities in collaboration with clinical networks, regional programs, and medical and operational leadership.
• Establish and lead the IH Clinical Research Network, aligning with external partners like the ACT Network.
• Jointly oversee regulatory compliance, including Health Canada audits.
• Promote professional development and mentorship for medical staff and research personnel.
• Support student-led research and academic partnerships with institutions such as UBCO and the Southern Medical Program.
Monitoring & Reporting
• Implement systems to monitor, analyze, and report on research activities.
• Present findings to key committees (e.g., HAMAC, QMC) to inform strategic priorities.
• Engage with patient-oriented research groups to ensure person- and family-centred care in research.
Collaboration & Representation
• Build strong internal and external relationships to advance research capacity.
• Represent IH at provincial and national forums, including academic and health research organizations.
• In collaboration with the Southern Medical Program (SMP), University of British Columbia (UBC) Faculty of Medicine, Assistant Dean of Research and the University of British Columbia Okanagan (UBCO) Vice-Principal, Research and Innovation:
o Attend Centre for Chronic Disease Prevention and Management (CCDPM) research team meetings (1 hour monthly)
o Support development and appointment of clinician scientists in IH region
o Support UBCO/SMP investigator led health research in IH
o Increase capacity for students to work with clinicians in research (UBC’s Doctor of Medicine (MD) flex students and UBCO/SMP graduate students).
o Attend the UBCO Interdisciplinary Student Health Conference annually
Additional Duties
• Support budget development and variance reporting.
• Contribute to publications and presentations at conferences and in peer-reviewed journals.
• Maintain an independent research program with active grants and scholarly output.
• Travel throughout Interior Health is an expectation for this role
QUALIFICATIONS
• Licensed or eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC.
• Research expertise with a minimum of 5 years of experience.
• Medical leadership experience and demonstrated effectiveness.
• Clinically active physician within Interior Health (credentialed and privileged or eligible for credentialling and privileging).
