Practice Details:

Interior Health is seeking a medical microbiologist to join its regional team in September 2027. The team provides consultation to four microbiology laboratories in Kelowna, Kamloops, Trail, and Cranbrook, as well as to a large regional network of infection control practitioners.

In this role, you will participate in the oversight of regional laboratory services, including bacteriology, mycology, and molecular testing. You will also contribute to clinical consultation and oversight for the regional Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) program and share in a clinically oriented on-call service with six microbiologists.

The ideal candidate will have experience in bacteriology, mycology, molecular testing, and IPAC. Strong interpersonal skills will support effective collaboration with regional administrative, hospital, infection control, and laboratory staff.

Qualifications:
  • Eligible for licensure with CPSBC
  • Eligible for Fellowship with the Royal College of Physicians of Canada (FRCPC)
  • Coverage with the Canadian Medical Protective Association is mandatory
Call Schedule:

Hours of work: full time
On call requirements: day call 1:6; evening/weekend on-call hours 1:7

Compensation:
Estimated Gross Income

Compensation is based on a provincially negotiated salary grid: 90% of $380,812–$423,125 in year 1, 95% in year 2, and 100% from year 3 onward.


Additional Incentives

For a full-time position, we offer up to $9,000 in assistance for moves within BC, up to $12,000 for moves from elsewhere in Canada, and up to $15,000 for moves from outside Canada. Please note that incentives are subject to change and that current rates are confirmed at the time of offer.

Kelowna General Hospital (KGH), one of BC's leading healthcare centres, is one of two tertiary hospitals within Interior Health. We offer a full range of services with approximately 400 beds and over 84,000 emergency department visits a year.

Home to the Interior Heart & Surgical Centre (IHSC), KGH houses BC’s only cardiac critical care centre outside of Victoria and the Lower Mainland, as well as its principal surgical site. The IHSC features 12 specialized operating rooms designed for thoracic, urology, neurosurgery, vascular, plastic, obstetric/gynecologic, ear, nose, and throat, orthopedic, general, and trauma surgeries. Of these, two operating rooms are dedicated to cardiac surgery. Within the IHSC, KGH also has a modern maternity ward and an adjacent neonatal intensive care unit.

Our state-of-the-art Centennial Building boasts 360,000 square feet and includes an expanded emergency and ambulatory care department, new medical inpatient units, modern operating rooms, and a rooftop helipad. Additional facilities include a dedicated pediatric ward, as well as adolescent and adult psychiatry units. The Dr. Walter Anderson Building houses enhanced laboratory and clinical departments, supporting advanced diagnostic and treatment capabilities.

KGH is also a teaching centre for the Southern Medical Program, affiliated with the University of British Columbia (UBC), and has an academic campus that serves as a satellite for the UBC Faculty of Medicine.
