Practice Details:

The Senior Medical Director (SMD) provides medical leadership to advance high‑quality care, improve patient outcomes, and support Interior Health’s strategic priorities. Reporting to the Executive Medical Director and working in a dyad with the Executive Director, Clinical Operations, the SMD offers clinical expertise, leads medical staff engagement, and ensures consistent standards of care across primary, community, and community‑based specialist services. The role includes dedicated administrative time alongside clinical practice.

Key Responsibilities
• Clinical & Strategic Leadership
• Lead medical direction for regional primary and community care, aligning services with strategic and operational plans.
• Guide development and implementation of evidence‑based policies, standards, and clinical processes.
• Partner with interdisciplinary providers to drive change management, innovation, and quality improvement.
• Collaborate with Quality & Patient Safety on metrics, reviews, and incident investigations.
• Support risk management strategies to improve service delivery and patient experience.
• Ensure compliance with Accreditation standards.
Medical Staff Leadership & Governance
• Recruit, engage, and support medical staff; oversee performance, contracts, and professional development.
• Address conduct, performance, and complaints in accordance with IH Medical Staff Bylaws and policies.
• Maintain medical governance and model professional behaviour.
• Manage assigned budgets and resources.
Medical Staff Resource Planning
• Lead local medical staff resource planning with MACs and IH leadership.
• Oversee recruitment, credentialing, privileging, appointment, and reappointment processes.

Partnerships & External Relations
• Build relationships with internal and external partners, including Divisions of Family Practice, other health authorities, and provincial/national organizations.
• Support public and media engagement with Communications & Engagement.
• Collaborate with UBC, SFU, and the Southern Medical Program on academic programs, teaching, and research.
Safety & Additional Duties
• Promote a safe work environment aligned with Occupational Health & Safety requirements.
• Participate in Medical Leadership On‑Call rotations.
• Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications:
  • • Eligible for Medical Staff privileges; licensed Physician, Nurse Practitioner, Dentist, or Midwife in B.C. • Master’s degree in health or business administration preferred. • Minimum 10 years clinical experience and 5+ years progressive healthcare leadership.
