Practice Details:

The Medical Director of the Primary Care Clinical Network is an important leadership role within the Quality and Professional Practice portfolio, providing medical administrative leadership for Primary Care services across Interior Health (IH). Working in a dyad leadership model with the Director, Primary Care Clinical Network and reporting to the Executive Medical Director, Quality, the Medical Director offers strategic direction to develop, integrate, and optimize Primary Care services, advancing quality of care and evidence informed practice and supporting IH and Ministry of Health priorities.
The Medical Director fosters strong partnerships across the health system, representing the perspectives of Primary Care providers and promoting effective communication between medical staff, operational leaders, and provincial partners.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Direction
• Co-leads development and implementation of Network goals aligned with IH’s vision and strategic plan.
• Participates in IH-wide service planning and advises on Primary Care operations.
• Engages physicians, nurse practitioners, and interdisciplinary partners to advance quality Primary Care and meet strategic deliverables.
• Advises on resource allocation and physician human resource planning.
Quality of Clinical Services
• Promotes high standards of clinical care and supports development of evidence based policies and guidelines.
• Provides expertise to plan, monitor, and evaluate Primary Care services and care models.
• Leads quality improvement initiatives, establishes performance indicators, and ensures compliance with accreditation and professional standards.
Partnerships & Collaboration
• Works with leaders across IH and provincial partners to align priorities and improve care delivery.
• Builds strong relationships with medical and operational leaders, supporting clinical governance and engagement.
• Represents IH in interactions with regulatory bodies and participates in key committees and advisory groups.
Patient Safety & Quality
• Investigates patient safety events and collaborates with Quality & Patient Safety to address issues.
• Supports implementation of patient safety activities and ensures systems are in place to monitor compliance with guidelines.
Leadership
• Establishes consistent medical leadership across UPCCs and IH Primary Care sites, aligned with IH values and strategic priorities.
• Ensures alignment of UPCCs with IH quality, safety, and clinical expectations.
• Supports clinical governance structures overseeing Primary Care services.
• Fosters a positive workplace culture, mentors medical leaders, and leads regular meetings for primary care medical leadership.
• Participates in performance reviews and professional standards processes as needed.
Teaching, Education & Research
• Promotes research and medical education within Primary Care.
• Builds partnerships with academic institutions.
• Identifies regional education priorities and participates in professional development activities.
Other Duties & Expectations
• Performs additional duties as requested by the Executive Medical Director, Quality.
• Expected workload is 7.5 hours per day, 1.5 days per week for 46 weeks annually.
• Travel within IH is expected as required to fulfill the duties of the role.

Qualifications:
  • • Licensed or eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC or the BC College of Nurses and Midwives. • Primary Care specialty expertise with a minimum of 5 years of experience. • Medical leadership experience and demonstrated effectiveness. • Clinically active physician or nurse practitioner within Interior Health (credentialed or eligible for credentialling, and eligible for privileging if determined to be required for aspects of this role).
