The Medical Lead, IH Non-Interventional Myocardial Infarction Care is a physician administrator and leader who works to achieve a collaborative working relationship between physicians and administration based on the Interior Health (IH) vision, mission and goals as they relate to the delivery of regional Myocardial Infarction Services. This physician works in collaboration and consultation with IH Medical Leadership, Program Administrators, medical-staff colleagues, employees and possibly volunteers as an adjunct to the primary responsibility for decision-making in matters of clinical activity and physician related matters.

ROLE SUMMARY
This role works in collaboration with the Interventional Medical Lead, IH Myocardial Infarction Care.
The Physician works in alignment with the IH Cardiac Program, Cardiac Services BC and Interior Health Strategic Initiatives and Planning on all matters related to cardiac services.
The Physician(s) jointly works with the Medical Director, IH Cardiac Program, Medical Director, IH Cardiology, Medical Director, Regional Cardiac Cath Lab, Program Director, and Regional Lead, IH Cardiac Program on all matters related to the IH Myocardial Infarction Care.
The Physician(s), jointly with the Program Director, IH Cardiac Program Regional Lead, IH Cardiac Program, Clinical Operations Manager, IH Regional Cardiac Catheterization Lab, BCEHS Regional Medical Directors and Cardiac Services BC to facilitate the collaborative inter-professional environment to enhance a patient focused service for acute myocardial infarction care across the health authority.
Actively contributes and participates in IH-wide leadership for Myocardial Infarction Care in all aspects of quality, patient safety, planning, operations, utilization management and evaluations of medical and physician services.

TERM
One year; renewable upon satisfactory review and mutual agreement for an additional 2 years.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

CLINICAL SERVICE
Actively participates and engages with members of the Cardiac Program Administrative Team at the site level and provides medical input into the day-to-day management of Myocardial Infarction Care.
Participates in making recommendations on the general patient treatment that will be provided for acute myocardial infarction patients across IH. Identify associated impacts and costs regarding any recommended procedural or practice changes including human resources (physicians and staff), supplies, equipment and other non-wage costs.
Promotes high quality, evidence-based standards of clinical care, quality assurance, and quality improvement and utilization management activities related to Myocardial Infarction Care.
Develops and provides ongoing review of STEMI, Non-STEMI, Transport Practices and associated clinical patient care protocols, processes and procedures based on best practice and professional standards jointly with Cardiac Program Administrative Leads.
Participates in defining program requirements and collaborates with the Medical Director, IH Cardiac Program, Medical Director, IH Cardiology, Medical Director, Regional Cardiac Cath Lab, Chiefs of Staff, Department Heads, in processes of physician impact analysis and implementation.
Helps to ensure maintenance of competence, professional standards of care and ethical conduct of physicians providing service in Acute Myocardial Infarction Care.
Participates in development and review of IH Myocardial Infarction Care Reporting Metrics for Myocardial Infarction Care Services in conjunction with the Program Medical Director, IH Cardiac Program and Medical Director, IH Cardiology, Medical Director, Regional Cardiac Cath Lab to support completion an annual review of clinical performance verses expectations of each aspect of Myocardial Infarction Care.
Ensures that formal expectations for continuing professional development, based on current clinical needs, are implemented and evaluated within Acute Myocardial Infarction Care.

QUALITY
Provides leadership and direction for quality, utilization, and management of risk within the Myocardial Infarction spectrum of care and participates in the identification of quality and performance indicators and target levels.
Designs processes and procedures to ensure that accreditation, best practice and professional standards according to the Canadian Cardiovascular Society will be met.
Leads and works collaboratively with the VP Quality, the Executive Medical Director, and Cardiac Program Medical and Administrative Leadership in the investigation of Patient Safety Learning System (PSLS) occurrences and patient complaints in order to ensure quality patient care is maintained.
Consults with other Physicians and staff on aspects of the program and on professional standards in the delivery of patient care.
Participates in the ongoing development of Cardiac Program Quality Improvement initiatives by attending regularly scheduled meetings, working jointly with Cardiac Program Medical and Administrative Leadership in the development and implementation of plans related to quality and services within the Program, and providing status updates of progress each fiscal quarter.
Monitors the Quality Improvement initiatives within Myocardial Infarction Care using relevant indicators including IH Myocardial Infarction Care Metrics and morbidity and mortality rates.

TEACHING, EDUCATION and RESEARCH
Identifies physician and staff education priorities for program development. Maintains knowledge of recent research and best practices in Myocardial Infarction Care and makes recommendations for changes to the Program Medical Director, IH Cardiac Program and/or IH Myocardial Infarction Care Quality Committee and/or Cardiac Program Leadership Team.
Assists in the development, implementation and communication of program standard of care and practices within Myocardial Infarction Care.
Ensures policies and procedures are consistent with Interior Health (IH) Standards and are aligned to provide the best possible care, teaching and research.
Supports UBCO Southern Medical Program in delivering IH’s academic mandate at the site level.

LEADERSHIP
Participates in local committees such as, but not limited to, AMI Advisory Committee, STEMI Review Committee, Regional Cardiac Quality and Planning Committee, SIPS Rounds, and other program meetings as required.
Provides direction and works collaboratively with the Medical Director, IH Cardiac Program and Department Head to monitor patient care, linking this to the credentialing, appointment, reappointment, peer review and mentorship and discipline processes for members of the Medical Staff.
Assists the Department Heads with medical staff planning and recruitment by working with individual specialty groups and the local MAC to develop and keep current a physician resource plan for Myocardial Infarction services.
As a physician and clinical expert, with the support of IH Senior Administration, obtains the necessary knowledge and training to contribute to the management of Myocardial Infarction Services and engages physicians in understanding and helping to execute the management plan related to delivery of services.
Represents the health service area and the Agency, where appropriate, in matters related to medico-legal issues, relationships with other agencies, professional licensing bodies and regulatory bodies.
Provides leadership and support for initiatives within the Myocardial Infarction Care in order to provide high-quality, safe patient care and optimum clinical resource utilization.

OTHER DUTIES
Performs other duties as may be requested from time to time by the Program Medical Director IH Cardiac Program, Regional Integrated Services Executive Medical Director or the VP Medicine & Quality.

Qualifications:

• Licensed or eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC or the BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a Physician, Nurse Practitioner, Dentist or Midwife in B.C. . Medical leadership experience and demonstrated effectiveness. Clinically active physician within Interior Health (credentialed or eligible for credentialling, and eligible for privileging if determined to be required for aspects of this role).
