Job Summary
Established under the Physician Main Agreement Memorandum of Agreement on Physical and Psychological Safety (MOA), the Medical Staff Occupational Health, Safety & Wellness (MS OHS&W) program provides a strategic and sustainable approach to advancing the physical and psychological health, safety and well-being of medical staff across Interior Health (IH). The Medical Director, Medical Staff Wellness (MSW), provides physician leadership and expertise to advance medical staff wellness and plays a key role in the development, implementation and ongoing evaluation of a Medical Staff Wellness Plan. Working in close partnership with the Medical Director, Medical Staff Safety, the Specialist, MS OHS&W, and internal and external partners, the role provides strategic leadership to strengthen wellness initiatives and supports for medical staff.

In alignment with the Physician Health & Safety Working Group (PHSWG) and IH Medicine priorities, the Medical Director, MSW, promotes awareness, adoption and effective use of wellness supports available through IH’s Employee Health & Wellness programs, Doctors of BC and other provincial partners. The role actively engages medical staff to identify emerging needs, barriers and opportunities for improvement, helping ensure organizational strategies, programs and services remain responsive to the realities of medical practice environments.

Through collaboration with medical leaders, Medical Staff Associations (MSAs), operational leaders, Employee Health & Wellness and other partners, the Medical Director, MSW, supports psychologically safe, healthy and inclusive practice environments and provides medical leadership, strategic advice, consultation and advocacy to strengthen the wellness experience of medical staff. This work is advanced in alignment with IH’s commitment to eliminate Anti-Indigenous racism and discrimination and foster culturally safe and inclusive workplaces.

Key DELIVERABLES
The Medical Director, MSW will develop and promote a toolkit which will provide the framework for all MSAs across IH to develop or expand scope of their wellness committees. This work will be phased over multiple years, with priorities as follows:

Year 1:
Development a toolkit for hospital-based wellness committees with suggested membership, structure, elements, metrics, administrative supports and funding opportunities

Development of a region wide peer support network (which may be used as a psychological support resource for incident reporting once it’s established in IH)

Development a Wellness resource website on the Medical Staff Hub that incorporates all materials developed and makes them easy to access

Ongoing consultation with MSAs and Chiefs of Staff to ensure materials being developed are appropriate and useful

Promotion of wellness materials developed to Medical Staff Associations across

the region through presentations/consultations with groups and ongoing support to develop Wellness committees

Participation in IH regional committees including Medical Staff Working group, HAMAC, IH MSA Executive Network Committee, and Psychological Safety working group


Year 2 to 5:
Continued support and mentorship for hospital-based wellness committees

Continued consultation with medical staff and leadership to ensure relevancy of strategies and tactics being used

Refinement and expansion of toolkit, including integrating any relevant psychological safety materials developed by IH WHS team

Development of a regional medical staff wellness network to help in introducing new tools to site and sharing ideas

Development of an ongoing regional educational seminar lectures with wellness related topics

Development of mindfulness/resilience training for medical leaders and staff with plan to train the trainer at sites

Development of respectful communication/civility training for medical leaders and staff with plan to train the trainer at sites

Development of a framework for recognition and appreciation efforts implemented regionally and at local sites

Integrating with Medical Affairs team to identify strategies to increase engagement, reduce administrative burden and support recruitment and retention

Participation in IH regional committees including Medical Staff Working group, HAMAC and Psychological Safety working group

This work is expected to decrease barriers to implementing wellness strategies region wide, improving engagement and medical staff psychological health and resilience.

Leadership Accountabilities
Medical Staff Wellness Advocacy

Champions a culture of wellness and psychological safety among medical staff.

Promotes awareness, understanding and utilization of existing wellness resources available through IH’s Employee Health & Wellness programs, Doctors of BC and other provincial partners.

Acts as a visible advocate and trusted medical leader supporting wellness initiatives and healthy practice environments.

Strategic Leadership and Partnerships
Provides strategic leadership for the planning, development, implementation, evaluation and continuous improvement of the Medical Staff Wellness Plan and associated programs and initiatives.

Works in close partnership with the Medical Director, Medical Staff Safety, the Specialist, MS OHS&W, Medical Affairs, Workplace Health & Safety (WHS) and organizational leaders to advance Medical Staff OHS&W priorities across IH.

Provides physician leadership and strategic advice to inform organizational policies, initiatives and decision-making related to medical staff wellness and psychological health and safety.

Identifies emerging gaps, risks and opportunities and uses medical staff experience, evidence, leading practices, metrics and feedback to inform continuous improvement.

Ensures Medical Staff OHS&W initiatives align with provincial priorities, the MOA, Medicine priorities, and IH strategic priorities.


Medical Staff and Medical Leader Engagement
Engages medical staff, MSAs, Chiefs of Staff and other medical leaders to understand emerging wellness needs, barriers and opportunities and inform regional and site-specific priorities.

Advises medical leadership and organizational partners on emerging trends and leading practices related to medical staff wellness, engagement, psychological health and safety, and healthy workplace culture.

Builds organizational commitment to the Medical Staff Wellness Plan and supports medical leaders in promoting and facilitating access to wellness resources.


Regional and External Partnerships and System Leadership
Maintains relationships with Doctors of BC, health authority partners and provincial wellness leaders to support collaboration, shared learning and leading practices.

Provides leadership to the PHSWG and represents IH on relevant provincial Medical Staff OHS&W committees, initiatives and forums.

Provides physician wellness leadership to relevant IH committees, working groups and governance structures.

In partnership with WHS and Indigenous Health, supports compliance with applicable standards and advances psychological safety, respectful workplaces and Indigenous cultural safety.

Promotes continuous quality improvement and compliance with accreditation standards, ethical practices, and legislative and regulatory requirements.


Other Duties
Performs other related duties as assigned.

WORKLOAD EXPECTATIONS
The Agency and the Physician agree that a reasonable service level expectation for the Medical Director, MSW, is 7.5 hours per day, 1 day per week, for 46 weeks per fiscal year including both dedicated and variable time commitments.


While the determination of actual hours professionally necessary to be worked is the responsibility of the Physician and the Agency, the Physician will monitor the appropriateness of the actual hours worked in meeting the roles and responsibilities of the position.

The results of monitoring the hours of work as described above will be discussed by the Physician and the Agency at least annually and used to conjointly plan revisions, if any, to this contract as agreed to between the Physician and the Agency.

Travel throughout IH is an expectation for this role.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP
The Medical Director, MSW, reports to the Executive Medical Director, Medical Affairs, and works in partnership with Medical Affairs, MS OHS&W and the WHS Manager for Psychological Safety. The Medical Director, MSW, participates in regional committees, including the MS OHS&W Internal Working Group, Health Authority Medical Advisory Committee (HAMAC) and Psychological Safety Working Group, to advocate for medical staff wellness and support the integration of policies that advance this work.

PERFORMANCE REVIEW
Re-appointment of the Medical Director, MSW, shall be based on a satisfactory performance review.

The performance review shall be conducted annually based on the responsibilities outlined in the role description of this position.

The Executive Medical Director, Medical Affairs shall conduct the review.

Input into the performance review shall be sought from others including but not limited to, the Vice President, Medicine, the Executive Medical Director, Medical Affairs, the Director, Medical Administration & Governance and the Specialist, Medical Staff OHS&W.

The roles and responsibilities outlined in this contract will be reviewed annually in conjunction with the Performance Review to ensure that the roles, duties, accountabilities and objectives remain aligned with the clinical programs of the Agency.

Excellent negotiation, problem-solving and conflict resolution skills and ability to relate effectively with clients, medical staff, and members of the interdisciplinary MS OHS&W teams.

Qualifications:
  • Medical Doctor in active clinical practice with current, or eligibility for, registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC.
  • Five years of successful clinical experience. Physician leadership training through formal internal or external programs, or equivalent. An understanding of the OHS regulation requirements. Candidates with executive or leadership training (e.g., NAVIG8, MBA, Physician Management Institute, Sauder Physician Leadership, etc.) will be considered an asset. A certification in Occupational Medicine will be considered an asset.
