Facility Details — Elk Valley Hospital:
The Elk Valley Hospital is a busy and challenging 20-bed, rural hospital set in the picturesque Elk Valley. The Elk Valley Hospital serves as a hub for the South Country and for the Primary and Community Health Centre’s in the neighboring communities of Sparwood and Elkford, respectively. Elk Valley Hospital services approximately 18,000 people in Fernie, Sparwood, Elkford and the south country.
Practice Details:

Come and practice in the beautiful city of Fernie. Nestled in the Rocky Mountains of South Eastern BC, Fernie is 70 minutes away from the Cranbrook airport and 3-hour drive west of Calgary, Alberta.

The Rocky Mountain Health Centre in Fernie is seeking a full scope rural family practitioner to join our collegial and supportive 5 physician practice. The ideal candidate will participate in clinical work, ER, hospital, and residential care. Duty doc for hospital coverage is a shared responsibility. ER shifts will be shared amongst 12 physicians which allows for the flexibility to drop/swap call. Our clinic uses Intrahealth Profile EMR. We have excellent support staff and regular access to an in-clinic chronic disease RN and community social worker. The clinic patient population is a mix of seniors, those with chronic disease, young families, athletes, and seasonal tourists.

Our clinic offers excellent teaching potential. We are affiliated with UBC Medical School and we regularly have medical students and residents. Fernie has great locum coverage through the 3 permanent community locums.

The Elk Valley Hosp is a 20-bed facility, servicing a population of 15 000 from Fernie, the Elk Valley, and South Country. Physicians cover their own in-patients on weekdays with an option to have a duty doctor cover the weekends. The operating theatre is open 24 hr per day except for 2 weekends per month. Enhanced medical services in Fernie include 1 gastroenterologist, 3 GP anesthetists, and 3 GP’s surgical skills. Our regional referral center is Cranbrook where we have excellent specialty and radiology support. Cranbrook is one hour away by road.

In Fernie, we receive level 1 MOCAP funding for the ER, REEF funding, and funding for long term care patients and duty doc services. Our NIA is 16.5%. Overhead is 30% on MSP billing’s and on any additional billings (private pay patients, WorkSafe, medico legal, etc). Bonuses are not subject to overhead ( MOCAP, retention, REEF, etc.).

Fernie is in a magnificent outdoor setting. The world-class Fernie Alpine Resort is located less than 10km from the hospital. The Nordic ski trails, epic mountain biking, and hiking, and some of the best mountain stream fishing available are also just minutes away. Fernie boasts a charming and vibrant historic downtown district with many excellent dining options.

Fernie is also well suited for young families with many early learning programs, excellent schools (both public and independent), an aquatic center, a splash park, an indoor ice rink and a full range of clubs and special interest organizations.

    • Recruitment bonus: $20,000
    • Relocation: $9,000 - $15,000 based on move location
    • Fee Premium: 16.10%
    • Annual retention fee: $16187.4
    • Rural CME: max of $5720 /year after 4 years in practice
    • Rural incentives are subject to change and current rates are confirmed at time of offer.
    • Candidates with a BC or Canada student loan may be eligible for BC or Canada loan forgiveness programs.
