Practice Details:

The Kelowna General Hospital (KGH) is seeking a medical microbiologist to join a regional medical microbiology team, and act as medical director for the regional Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) program.

Interior Health serves a population of ~750,000 spread over a vast geographic area ~215,000 square kilometres in size, in the southern interior of BC. The region has 2 tertiary hospitals, 4 regional hospitals, 16 community hospitals, and 24 health care centres with ~1500 acute care beds, and over 6800 long term care beds. The region is served by 4 microbiology laboratories in Kelowna, Kamloops, Trail and Cranbrook, which are overseen by the regional medical microbiology group. All laboratories perform bacteriology and real-time PCR testing, while Kelowna and Kamloops laboratories also perform mycology testing.

The KGH medical microbiology group runs a busy, clinically oriented service, providing medical consultation to regional physicians, and overseeing 3 medical microbiology laboratories located in Kelowna, Cranbrook and Trail, which serve 16 hospitals across the region. The group also provides vacation relief and on call coverage to a fourth microbiology laboratory located in Kamloops, which has a dedicated microbiologist and serves the western portion of the region. Medical oversight of regional IPAC as well as Antimicrobial Stewardship programs are also performed by the KGH group. KGH microbiologists are also involved in teaching UBC medical undergraduate and postgraduate trainees.

The new microbiologist will join a well-established, collegial group, and will split his or her time between laboratory and IPAC based work. The new microbiologist will share microbiology day call with the 3 other KGH microbiologists (1:4), but evening/weekend on call will be shared between the 4 regional microbiologists (1:5). The microbiologist will spend the remainder of his or her off call time dedicated to developing the regional IPAC program, in the capacity of medical director. This role will require participation in regional, provincial and national committees, and will require regional travel on a regular basis.

The ideal candidate will be a medical microbiologist with experience working as a consultant for Infection Prevention and Control. Extra training in Infection Prevention and Control an asset, but is not required.
