Facility Details — Kelowna General Hospital:

Kelowna General Hospital (KGH) is one of two tertiary hospitals within Interior Health and is the region’s main referral center offering a full range of services with approximately 400 beds and over 84,000 ED visits yearly. Kelowna General Hospital is home to the Interior Heart & Surgical Centre (IHSC) which opened in 2015 and is BC’s only cardiac critical care centre outside of Victoria and the Lower Mainland. IHSC is Kelowna General Hospital’s principal surgical site and features; 12 specialized Operating Rooms created for Thoracic, Urology, Neurosurgery, Vascular, Plastics, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Ears Nose and Throat, Orthopedics, General and Trauma surgeries with 2 ORs dedicated to Cardiac Surgery. Our state of the art Centennial Building also recently opened and boasts a total of 360,000 square feet, an expanded emergency and ambulatory care department, modern operating rooms and a rooftop helipad. KGH is also a teaching centre for the Southern Medical Program affiliated with UBC. With the Interior Heart & Surgical Centre and new medical inpatient units in the Centennial Building, dedicated psychiatry units for youth and adults, a modern maternity ward, enhanced laboratory and clinical departments in the new Dr. Walter Anderson Building, and an academic campus that serves as a satellite for the University of British Columbia Medical School, KGH has become one of BC’s leading healthcare centres.

Practice Details:

Fantastic opportunity for a general adult Psychiatrist to join the expanding Psychiatry department at Kelowna General Hospital. Discover the rewards of career satisfaction working within a strong culture of teamwork while delivering excellence in care! Our group of Psychiatrists provides service to KGH’s 30 bed inpatient unit, 6 bed Adult MH Intensive Care Unit, consults to the medical/surgical units and the emergency department, as well as maintain a community based practice. Duties will include, but not be limited to, patient assessment and treatment, collaboration with clinicians and managers, and assistance with the development and maintenance of appropriate programs, policies, and procedures. There are multiple opportunities in supporting the local community through the outpatient counselling department for Community Mental Health and Substance Use (MHSU) or the broader community through telepsychiatry. This role also offers teaching opportunities to medical students and residents as KGH is affiliated with UBC Faculty of Medicine Southern Medical Program.

In addition to general adult psychiatry, this position also has 0.3 FTE dedicated to our Developmental Disability Mental Health (DDMH) program. Join this highly capable team which includes Nursing and Health Sciences Professions (Masters level in Social and Behavioural Sciences) throughout the region. The program sees 800 - 1200 referrals each year and operates 10 clinics across the Interior Health Region. The DDMH team services clients who are as young as 14 years old, and have a developmental disability that meets Community Living BC (CLBC) criteria for service. This role will situate you largely in Kelowna with some need for travel and outreach to the surrounding region. You will work closely with Psychiatry DDMH lead and the DDMH tertiary leadership. The role may include some participation in provincial DDMH initiatives and other psychiatrists in DDMH programs across the province. Experience in this area is an asset but not required.

Qualifications:
    • Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada (FRCPC)
    • Doctorate in Medicine
    • Eligible for licensure with CPSBC; Coverage with the Canadian Medical Protective Association is mandatory
