We are looking for a number of physicians to join us at the Royal Inland Hospital, Kamloops in a newly created role, Quick Response Team (QRT) physician. If you have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, enjoy working in a multidisciplinary team environment and have a passion for problem solving to create efficiencies, this role may be for you!

The QRT Physician works 8 hour shifts Monday-Friday (daytime) working from the ED to assist Emergency Room Physicians (ERP) in supporting the appropriate admission and discharge of inpatients. A roster of physicians will be recruited to ensure multiple providers each work part time (flexible scheduling) to fill the shift each weekday. Compensation is Alternate Payment Plan (APP).


The QRT physician will determine patients with moderate to low medical needs who can be best supported in the community and prevent hospital admissions or facilitate discharge.

In this role, you will have regular ongoing communications with Emergency Room Physicians, Hospitalists, Specialist groups and the QRT ED Team (Transition Liaison, Social Worker, Respiratory Therapist, Occupational Therapist and Physiotherapist) in addition to having a strong awareness of community services.

This role is intended to:
Facilitate the transition from ED to community for adult clients unknown/known to Home Health for short-term support.
Prevent hospital admissions of medically stable community clients in crisis who are patients currently in the emergency department
Facilitate the discharge of community clients admitted to hospital who may be appropriate for discharge with enhanced home health/QRT follow up
Prevent return visits to ED by assisting with community reach-in supports
Support existing known to home health/QRT clients in acute or transition team identified
Facilitate the transition from hospital units to home

Royal Inland Hospital:

The Royal Inland Hospital (RIH) is a 273-bed facility that serves as the referral centre for approximately 250,000 people, and is located in the Thompson Cariboo Shuswap Health Service Area. As one of two Interior Health tertiary referral hospitals and Level 1 Trauma Centres, RIH receives over 250 major trauma and 72,000 ED visits per year.

The Phil and Jennie Gaglardi Tower opened at RIH in the summer of 2022. Among other services, the tower includes child and adolescent mental-health and substance-use inpatient unit as well as a 30 bed general psychiatric unit (20 general and 10 high observation beds and 3 seclusion beds).
